"Blue Heron," a compelling family drama, celebrated its World Premiere in competition at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival. There, it was honored with the Swatch First Feature Award and the Junior Jury Award. Subsequently, the film made its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was a highly discussed title and received the Best Canadian Discovery award.
The narrative follows a Canadian-Hungarian family of six as they establish a new life on Vancouver Island during the late 1990s. The youngest child, Sasha, experiences the unfolding internal family dynamics and the increasingly troubling behavior of the eldest sibling, Jeremy.
Filmmaker Sophy Romvari, based in Toronto, brings her acclaimed festival experience to "Blue Heron." Her previous shorts have been recognized internationally and featured in a Criterion Channel retrospective. The film is a joint production by Nine Behind Productions (Canada) and BODDAH (Hungary), with international sales handled by MoreThan Films. The film recently secured distribution in the UK with Conic and is set for a nationwide expansion by Janus.
