Art conservators working high above the floor in Blenheim Palace's Great Hall have stumbled upon a unique historical surprise. While meticulously restoring paintings, the team discovered about 11 names and dates unexpectedly inscribed on the ceiling area, some 67 feet above them. They initially believed they were the first to access these heights in centuries.
The inscriptions reveal a fascinating glimpse into the past, with the earliest found signature belonging to a plasterer identified as T Harwood, dated 1843. This discovery offers a direct connection to the palace's earlier workers and their activities.
Further adding to the historical intrigue, a group believed to have worked on the coving in 1968 also left their names, documenting a more recent layer of human interaction with the stately home's architecture.
