Emmy-nominated director Peter Hoar, acclaimed for his work on HBO's The Last of Us, has co-founded Multitude Productions, a new indie outfit focused on genre-based intellectual property. The company has secured rights to the cult British sci-fi series Blake's 7, which originally aired on the BBC from 1978 to 1981. Hoar plans to direct the reboot, with the project set to be presented to buyers shortly. Matthew Bouch, a co-founder of Multitude, expressed a desire for the series to return to the BBC.
Blake's 7, created by Terry Nation, followed political dissident Roj Blake leading rebels against a totalitarian federation. Hoar believes the timing is opportune for such genre revivals, citing a perceived rut in existing shows and reduced funding for high-end scripted content. He draws parallels to the success of Disney+'s Andor, emphasizing integrity and sophistication over massive budgets, and views Doctor Who's recent trajectory as a cautionary tale about production challenges.
Multitude Productions aims to leverage British genre IP for international markets, seeking economical production models. Beyond Blake's 7, the company is developing TV series based on Luke Rhinehart's "The Dice Man" sequel, Patrick Carman's "Skeleton Creek" book series, a video game adaptation, and a sci-fi series with ITV. They are also exploring international co-productions, such as a Japanese novel adaptation partially funded by the Singaporean government.
