Director Bassam Tariq has shared his perspective on the cancellation of Marvel's Blade film, starring Mahershala Ali. Tariq discussed the unexpected positive outcomes from the project's shelving during a recent interview. He highlighted that the experience enabled him to collaborate with Ali on a different, highly personal project, Your Mother.
This new film features Ali in the role of Latif, a religious hitman navigating work, faith, and fatherhood. Early reviews have been enthusiastic, with critics praising Ali's performance and deeming the role fitting for an actor of his caliber. Tariq indicated that this creative detour helped him "think big" and discover a "secret ingredient" for his filmmaking.
Despite finding positives, Tariq acknowledged what might have been for the Blade movie. He revealed plans for the film to partly take place in the 1920s and noted that Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth Carter was attached. Significant production elements, including a large train set and casting like Aaron Pierre, were in motion before the project was halted.
