For generations, Hollywood has shaped a singular image of the American cowboy, largely ignoring the Black figures who were integral to the West. Photographer Ivan McClellan has dedicated over a decade to capturing a different narrative through his lens, focusing on Black cowboys and cowgirls. His upcoming 112-page hardcover book, "Eight Seconds: Legacy in Motion," set for release in fall 2026, will feature 91 previously unpublished photographs.
McClellan's project is not about correcting historical omissions but celebrating contemporary Black rodeo culture. His journey began in 2015, immersing himself in communities across the U.S. He discovered charismatic individuals with larger-than-life personalities, whose style blends traditional cowboy aesthetics with modern fashion, seen in elements like Jordans paired with cowboy hats. This fusion reflects a long history of Black cultural innovation.
The title "Eight Seconds" refers to the bull rider's minimum required time for a qualified ride, a moment of intense discipline and courage. McClellan's work extends beyond competition, revealing the dedication and sacrifices made by these individuals. Many balance full-time jobs and families with the demanding lifestyle of rodeo, often facing financial challenges.
Expanding his storytelling, McClellan is also producing a documentary that will explore the realities behind his photographs. His decade-long immersion has allowed for intimate portrayals, capturing personal growth and the often precarious balance between heroic competition and everyday life. This work arrives amidst growing mainstream interest in Black Western culture, partly influenced by recent trends in music and fashion.
