Birmingham Airport has opened a new artistic centerpiece, the Icons Wall, dedicated to honoring prominent figures from the West Midlands. The vibrant mural showcases a diverse array of local talents, including music icons Ozzy Osbourne and UB40, and the creative force behind Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight.
The artwork also features beloved comedian Jasper Carrott, acclaimed chef Glynn Purnell, Paralympian Ellie Simmonds, and the late poet Benjamin Zephaniah. This initiative aims to celebrate the rich heritage and achievements of individuals who have made significant contributions to sports, arts, and culture.
Operations director Al Titterington stated that the airport staff had long desired to recognize notable Brummies. Following the passing of Ozzy Osbourne, the airport's commitment to creating a focal point intensified.
A broad nomination process involving airport colleagues led to the selection of the icons depicted, representing decades of contributions and more recent achievements alike, ensuring a comprehensive tribute to the region's celebrated personalities.
