Summary
- Billy Joel reassures fans he is recovering well after brain surgery.
- He had a shunt implanted to treat normal pressure hydrocephalus.
- The singer's balance and hearing have been affected by his condition.
Singer Billy Joel, 77, has provided a health update to his fans, stating he is "okay" following treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). He underwent surgery in September 2026 to implant a brain shunt, a procedure he was initially hesitant about. This condition had previously caused him to cancel concerts starting May 23, 2025.
Joel revealed on SiriusXM that his balance and hearing have been impacted by NPH, though he acknowledges his age and decades of loud rock music might also contribute. He explained that his doctors advised him to reduce performing loud shows, as it could be akin to a concussion and potentially damage brain nerves.
While his recovery is ongoing, Joel noted that the shunt has improved his memory, balance, and overall ability to function. He is continuing physical therapy as advised by his medical team, prioritizing his health over rushing back to touring.
Currently, there is no confirmed date for Billy Joel's return to regular live performances. He is focused on his recovery and spending more time with his family, including his wife Alexis Roderick and daughters Della Rose and Remy Anne, as well as his adult daughter Alexa Ray Joel.
