Having had a complicated relationship with his own father, Howard, Joel expressed his desire to ensure his children feel loved and cared for.
"It means a lot to me, and I think that's maybe part of the father thing," Joel told PEOPLE in July 2025. "I didn't have a dad, so it was very important for me to be a dad." The five-time Grammy winner also discussed his decision to welcome his younger daughters later in life, saying he initially thought he was "too old" but has found great joy in being a father again.
