The film "Big Little Things," a lesbian coming-out story, was inspired by a significant family conflict experienced by director-producer duo Michelle Zhou and Chun Yu. This rift originated four and a half years prior when Yu wished to share her relationship with her parents, a desire complicated by the social taboo of same-sex relationships in China. Despite attempts to conceal their relationship, Yu's parents discovered the truth, leading to an overnight family breakdown.
Zhou and Yu expanded this personal experience into a feature film, exploring societal and heteronormative pressures within the Chinese LGBTQ+ community. The narrative includes a fictional scenario where a fake boyfriend is introduced to pacify a matchmaking-obsessed family, reflecting the prevalence of lavender marriages. This situation highlights the difficult choices faced by many within the community.
A remarkable aspect of the film is the casting of Yu's real-life father, Hai, in the father role. His participation provided a therapeutic outlet, allowing him to express emotions he had suppressed in reality. During filming, Hai openly sobbed, confessing his pain over feeling like he had lost his daughter, thereby using the role to mend his own emotional wounds and bridge unspoken feelings with his family.
Looking ahead, Zhou and Yu plan to continue their collaboration. Zhou is developing "Another Stranger," a family comedy-drama based on her experience with her cousin during a COVID-19 lockdown in Thailand. Yu is working on her debut feature, a Chinese diaspora story set in Los Angeles and Europe, actively seeking international producers.
