Lightdox has acquired worldwide sales rights for Gabriel Tejedor's documentary, "The Big Boom!," set to premiere at IDFA's Frontlight program. The film investigates a Bulgarian town caught between Europe's shifting geopolitical landscape, where arms production for Ukraine's war effort intersects with lingering connections to Russia and the daily necessities of its inhabitants.
Kazanlak, a town historically famed for its rose oil and folklore, also hosts a significant arms industry. The local Arsenal factory, the primary employer, manufactures weapons and ammunition for thousands of residents. Through the experiences of four individuals, the documentary examines the industry's role in the town's economy and identity.
Filmmaker Gabriel Tejedor stated his interest in the subject was ignited by the invasion of Ukraine, prompting him to question the meaning of pacifism today. He emphasizes that "The Big Boom!" aims to confront the moral gray areas within Europe's paradoxical situation rather than to condemn.
Anna Berthollet, CEO of Lightdox, highlighted the film's powerful portrayal of Europe's contradictions, where a town supplies weapons for war while navigating its allegiances and beliefs. Tejedor's sensitive depiction of Kazanlak and its people, informed by his own Bulgarian heritage, reveals the deep layers of history, identity, and geopolitical influences shaping the region.
