The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) will honor its founder, Kim Dong-ho, with the Korean Cinema Award at its opening ceremony on October 6, 2026. Kim, who established BIFF in 1996 and led it for its initial 14 years, is recognized for his pivotal role in advancing Korean cinema globally. His refusal to submit the festival's program to government censors in its inaugural year secured BIFF's independence and fostered trust among filmmakers, transforming it into Asia's leading cinema event.
Kim's career spans over three decades in public service, including a vice minister role at South Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. He also founded the Korean Film Council and served as chairman of BIFF after stepping down as festival director in 2010. Remarkably, at 85, Kim directed his debut feature documentary, "Mr. Kim Goes to the Cinema," which premiered last year and explores cinema's evolving purpose with global filmmakers.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival will run from October 6-15, 2026. The ceremony will also recognize Michelle Yeoh with the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award and Ann Hui with the Camellia Award.
