A new documentary, "Because of You Ka Kui," focusing on the life of Beyond's iconic frontman Wong Ka Kui, will premiere in the U.K. as the opening film for the sixth Odyssey Film Festival. This event, scheduled from September 28 to October 10, will showcase the film both in cinemas and online. The documentary delves into Wong's creative drive and his significant impact on a generation.
Directed by Rosa Pang, the film is produced by Beyond's founding member Yip Sai Wing and their former manager Leslie Chan. It is crafted through interviews with those close to Wong, complemented by rare concert recordings and previously unreleased archival footage. The narrative follows Wong's evolution as a musician and his personal ideals.
Odyssey's artistic director, Hiu Man Chan, highlighted the film's thematic relevance to the festival's #Fashion theme, noting how Beyond influenced their generation's culture and self-expression. An interview with founding member William Tang was specifically filmed in London, adding a U.K. connection to the documentary's production. The film, which had an earlier theatrical run in Asia, seeks to present the 'ordinary person' behind the legendary performer.
Malaysian company Abnormal Studios is handling the international sales of "Because of You Ka Kui." Director Rosa Pang stated that the film prioritizes the honesty of Wong Ka Kui's character and beliefs, which she believes remain relevant today. The festival's programming will include both older and new films, with some support from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London.
