Artist Betye Saar Reimagines Black Liberation, Dies at 99

Artist Betye Saar, a celebrated pioneer of the Black arts movement, passed away on Sunday at her Los Angeles home. She was 99 years old.

Saar was a master of assemblage, creating sculptures from everyday objects. She famously recontextualized Jim Crow-era artifacts, such as dolls and washboards, recasting them as potent symbols of Black liberation and empowerment. Her artistic explorations extended into printmaking and film, delving into themes of family, spirituality, and the African diaspora.

Beginning her professional life in design, Saar transitioned to fine art at age 35, maintaining a prolific creative output well into her 90s. She drew inspiration from her community of Black artists and iconic landmarks like Simon Rodia's Watts Towers. Saar meticulously gathered discarded objects from flea markets and yard sales, imbuing them with new meaning and energy to critique societal depictions of Black Americans.

Her most iconic work, "The Liberation of Aunt Jemima" from 1972, radically reimagined the controversial "mammy" caricature. In Saar's rendition, Aunt Jemima wields a rifle and a grenade, a stark contrast to her origins as a marketing image for pancake mix. This powerful piece challenged racist stereotypes.

Saar also incorporated natural materials from her global travels, investigating diverse spiritual practices and the visual culture of the African diaspora. She mentored numerous artists, solidifying her status as a leading figure in West Coast art. In Spring 2026, she was honored with induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
