Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino: Singer or Songwriter?

Bethany Cosentino is taking a well-earned victory lap with Best Coast's latest iTunes Session release. Following a banner year marked by increased visibility and touring, Cosentino has already confirmed plans for another Best Coast record. This new session showcases a significant growth in Cosentino's vocal abilities. Tracks such as 'Crazy For You' and 'Boyfriend' are presented with sharper hooks and improved fidelity, a testament to recording in studios like East West, which previously hosted sessions for Pet Sounds.

While the enhanced clarity and refined production on Best Coast's iTunes Session offer a refreshing listening experience, the spotlight on Cosentino's vocals also highlights areas for development. Her rendition of Loretta Lynn's 'Fist City' demonstrates a powerful singing talent. However, the article suggests that her songwriting may not yet match her vocal strengths. If her lyrical content evolves as significantly as her voice has, this gap is expected to close soon.
