In a significant development, Berto Romero's first feature film as a writer-star, "Five More Minutes," has had its international sales rights acquired by Barcelona studio Filmax. The announcement comes just over a year after the project was unveiled as part of Movistar Plus+'s upcoming movie slate.
"Five More Minutes" is a genre-blending dark fantasy comedy-thriller directed by popular Spanish filmmaker Javier Ruiz Caldera, whose previous works like "Wolfgang" and "Three Many Weddings" have found commercial success in Spain. The film follows an on-the-rocks couple who retreat to a secluded countryside house for the weekend, only to find themselves trapped in a time loop where the last five minutes of the day keep repeating endlessly.
Filmax, which already handles the upcoming distribution of the film in Spain, is thrilled to add "Five More Minutes" to its international lineup. The studio's head of international, Ivan Díaz, praised the project's "wonderful commercial potential" and the talented creative team behind it, including producers from Ikiru Films and Mediapro Studio. Filmax plans to showcase the first images of the film at this week's American Film Market, where they expect it to be one of the standout titles.
Romero, a renowned comedian in Spain known for his work on the popular late-night show "Late Motiv," has expressed his interest in exploring hybrid genres beyond pure comedy. "Five More Minutes" marks his first foray into the realm of dark, horror-tinged fantasy, a genre he has previously explored in his second series for Movistar Plus+, "The Other Side."
