Berlinale Shines: Indie Films Take Top Awards

This year's Berlinale has concluded, with several independent films receiving significant recognition from various juries. The Franco-Chadian film Soumsoum, directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, was awarded best film by the Fipresci jury of international film critics. This drama follows a teenager with supernatural visions, described as a modern fable of resilience.
The Ecumenical jury honored Fernando Eimbcke's Mexican film Moscas with their top prize. This black-and-white drama tells the story of a young boy connecting with a lonely woman while awaiting news of his mother. Its subtle character development was highly praised.
Further accolades included the Fipresci prize for the British prison drama Animol in the Perspectives section. Marcelo Martinessi's Paraguayan drama Narciso took the Panorama prize, and AnyMart won for best Forum film. The Teddy Award for best LGBTQ+ feature went to Iván & Hadoum.
Documentaries also found favor, with Bucks Harbor receiving the Ecumenical jury's Panorama honor and River Dreams winning in the Forum section. These awards celebrate a wide spectrum of independent filmmaking from around the globe.
