In a recent interview, acclaimed actor Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed how fatherhood has dramatically changed him, both as a person and as a performer. The 49-year-old Marvel star, who shares three sons with his wife Sophie Hunter, says that becoming a parent has made his "emotions paper thin."
Cumberbatch explains that this newfound emotional sensitivity has directly influenced his acting, allowing him to tap into feelings he couldn't access before. "That's what changes how you act, when you become a father," he says. "It isn't necessarily crossovers between your experience and the character's, it's that you become an unfettered channel to stuff that you weren't before."
The actor's emotional transformation is evident in his latest project, a film adaptation of the novel "Grief Is the Thing with Feathers." During an especially poignant scene where Cumberbatch's character is packing his wife's clothes, the raw emotion was so palpable that some crew members had to leave the set, unable to contain their own tears.
Cumberbatch's journey as a father has not only impacted his craft but also his overall outlook on life. He has spoken about how parenthood has made him more aware of his own mortality, shifting his priorities and the way he values his time. "When you become a parent, your thoughts turn more towards mortality," he reflects.
Despite his Hollywood superstardom, Cumberbatch remains grounded, with his sons keeping him humble and reminding him that he is, above all, a dad. As the actor puts it, "Should anyone wonder if I can't recover from this kind of celebration and ego pump, 'Shut up, daddy,' 'Stupid fart face,' being hit in the face, fought over ... is a daily occurrence for me at home, so thank you for keeping me grounded, boys."
