Spencer Pratt has vocally criticized actor Ben Affleck's perspective on addiction recovery, stemming from a resurfaced 2021 interview. In the clip, Affleck stated that he believes "the cure for addiction is suffering," elaborating that a profound personal crisis, particularly impacting his relationship with his children, was the catalyst for his sobriety. He noted that hitting rock bottom and subsequent amends were crucial to his sustained recovery.

Pratt, who previously campaigned for Los Angeles mayor with addiction as a central theme, challenged Affleck's viewpoint. He posted the clip, questioning if Affleck would explain his theory to those suffering on Skid Row, where hardship is prevalent yet addiction persists. Pratt, who has advocated for involuntary treatment under California's expanded conservatorship law (SB 43) for those with severe addiction, believes many are unable to seek help independently.

Pratt's campaign platform had focused heavily on addressing the city's homelessness crisis as primarily an addiction issue, citing the impact of fentanyl and methamphetamine. He proposed rehabilitation campuses and stricter enforcement of drug laws, criticizing existing approaches that he felt did not sufficiently tackle addiction. Affleck has spoken openly about his own struggles with alcoholism, seeking treatment multiple times since 2001, with his children being a significant motivation for his sobriety.
