According to reports, Kirkland had been struggling with dementia for the past year and had suffered multiple falls and injuries, including fractures to her neck, right wrist, and left hip. The actress had also developed two separate life-threatening infections in the past year, further complicating her health issues. A GoFundMe page set up to support Kirkland's medical care revealed that her condition had worsened after SAG-AFTRA cancelled supplemental insurance for members over the age of 65 in 2021.
