Young people in Belfast are actively shaping the city's live music scene through the Volume Control program. This initiative, run by the OhYeah Centre for nearly two decades, empowers participants aged 14 to 18 to manage entire music events. They are responsible for crucial aspects such as budget planning, band bookings, event marketing, and ticket sales, organizing diverse music nights like grunge, metal, and raves.
The program offers invaluable practical experience, helping participants develop essential skills like stress management and public speaking. For many, like 16-year-old Anna, it solidifies a desire for a career in the music industry. Participants are also working towards an OCN qualification in Event Management, further enhancing their professional development. The social aspect is also highlighted, with young people connecting with peers and gaining confidence.
Chelsea Andrews, Youth Engagement Manager at the OhYeah Centre, noted the significant development and growing confidence of the young organizers with each successful event. The program, supported by the Ed Sheeran Foundation and the Live Trust, fosters a sense of pride and creativity, inspiring the next generation of music industry professionals. The next event is scheduled for March 13th.
