Pyrenees Bear Doc 'Shepherd' Gets U.S. Streaming Deal

The compelling documentary 'The Shepherd And The Bear,' a nominee for BFIA awards, is set to reach American audiences. The film has been acquired for U.S. distribution and will be available for streaming on the Criterion Channel beginning in Spring 2026. This ensures a wide reach for a story that delves into the intricate relationship between nature and human tradition.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the French Pyrenees, the film intimately explores the tensions arising from the reintroduction of brown bears into a region deeply rooted in shepherding. It chronicles the struggles of a seasoned shepherd seeking a successor while his flock faces predation, and the fascination of a young boy with the elusive bears.

The U.S. theatrical release will commence in early 2026, targeting mountain, rural, and agricultural communities impacted by similar ecological challenges. Additionally, a qualifying run in New York City is planned from November 21-27 to position the film for major awards.
