Summary
- The musical adaptation of the film Beaches fails to impress.
- Jessica Vosk delivers a standout performance as Bette Midler's character.
- The new musical features original songs that are unmemorable and repetitive.

Garry Marshall's 1988 film 'Beaches,' a poignant tear-jerker about friendship, has been adapted into a stage musical, but the production has not met expectations. The current version, based more closely on Iris Rainer Dart's novel, features a score by veteran music-industry figure Mike Stoller. However, the original songs are described as samey and unmemorable, with lyrics that are heavily expositional and weighed down by jazz melodies.
Notably, few songs from the original film appear in the stage show, a decision that disappoints fans. The production's saving grace is Jessica Vosk's dynamic performance as Cee Cee Bloom, who injects much-needed energy into the show. Samantha Schwartz also shines as the younger Cee Cee. Kelli Barrett, as Cee Cee's friend Bertie, has less to do, often singing the show's dullest numbers.
Directors Lonny Price and Matt Cowart struggle to build emotional momentum, particularly in the story's climax. The set's heavy reliance on digital projection contributes to a cold atmosphere, undermining the intended sentimental saga. While a tear might still be shed at the end, it is more likely due to memories of the film or personal reflection than the stage show's impact.
