Director Baz Luhrmann, 63, and production designer Catherine Martin, 61, have maintained a successful partnership for nearly three decades, yet they lead distinctly separate lives.
Luhrmann described their marriage as "absolutely real" on a podcast, acknowledging its non-traditional aspects. He explained that they found an authentic "contract" for their relationship, prioritizing individual space which has helped them navigate their careers and family life.
The couple met in 1988 at Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art and married on January 26, 1997. Martin has since been the production designer for all of Luhrmann's films, earning four Academy Awards for her work on "Moulin Rouge!" and "The Great Gatsby."
Their current projects include a dining carriage for the Belmond British Pullman train, set to launch in early summer of 2026. They share two children, Lilian, 22, and William, 20, who often tease their father.
Luhrmann and Martin previously revealed they sleep in separate beds, having determined years ago that they both require personal space. Despite this, they maintain a deep connection, with Luhrmann stating he loves his wife and doesn't know what he would do without her.
