Wagner's symbolic opera, Parsifal, has been reimagined at the Bayreuth festival in Jay Scheib's 2023 production, which continues until August 25, 2026. This revival introduces a large blue crystal as the grail, accompanied by dramatic light shows and extensive use of filmed closeups that dominate the stage, particularly in Act 1. The production presents a complex, often violent, interpretation of the myth.
Vocally, the performance shines with Miina-Liisa Värelä delivering a powerful Kundry with goth energy, and Andreas Schager as Parsifal offering strong, if sometimes fragmented, singing. Georg Zeppenfeld's Gurnemanz is compelling, and Jordan Shanahan effectively portrays Klingsor. Michael Volle's Amfortas is particularly moving in his lyrical moments.
However, the orchestra, conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, struggled with consistency. While moments of exquisite symphonic richness were present, intonation and ensemble issues were noticeable in the theatre's clear acoustic. The production's bold visual choices and the singers' strong performances stand out amidst the orchestral fluctuations.
