The upcoming 98th Academy Awards, set for March 15, will see six notable figures from the entertainment industry absent from the guest list. These individuals, comprising actors and filmmakers, have been banned by the Academy due to past controversies and violations of conduct standards.
Actor Carmine Caridi was among the first, removed in 2004 for illegally distributing Oscar screeners. Film producer Harvey Weinstein was expelled in 2017 following numerous accusations of sexual assault. Bill Cosby was removed in 2018 after his conviction for sexual assault, and director Roman Polanski faced expulsion in 2018 due to his 1977 guilty plea for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Cinematographer Adam Kimmel was banned in 2021 after past convictions for sexual offenses involving minors came to light. Most recently, actor Will Smith received a ten-year ban from all Academy events, including the Oscars, following his on-stage altercation at the 2022 ceremony.
