Contemporary ballet choreographer Alice Topp, a rising Australian talent, has created a new piece titled "Sisu," inspired by the devastating bushfires in Central Victoria. The fires, which ravaged pastoral communities and famous apple orchards, provided Topp with a powerful visual for her exploration of resilience and tenacity. She sought to embody the Finnish concept of "sisu," representing hope found even in the absence of light.
"Sisu" will premiere on May 28, 2026, as part of Houston Ballet's "An Evening with the Stars." Collaborating with set and lighting designer Jon Buswell, Topp has developed an immersive environment evoking a volcanic storm. The ballet's three sections, set to Arvo Pärt's music, aim to convey a community's rising and recalibration after profound loss, culminating in a "moment of the light at the end of the tunnel."
Topp's artistic process emphasizes emotional depth and vulnerability, encouraging dancers to share personal experiences of grief and pain to inform movement. This approach fosters a unique collaborative environment, moving away from traditional perfection-driven ballet studios. Topp, a former dancer for 17 years, transitioned to choreography and has since gained international recognition with works for companies in New Zealand, Western Australia, Singapore, and Germany.
