20 Sep
Summary
- Oldest community Durga Puja in Kolkata held ceremonies Sunday.
- Legal dispute over committee members resolved by courts.
- Pandal theme is Swaminarayan Temple in New Jersey.
The Baghbazar Sarbojanin Durgotsav & Exhibition, Kolkata's oldest community Durga Puja, officially began its idol-making and pandal construction phases on Sunday with the kathamo and khunti puja ceremonies. This event followed a legal resolution concerning the election of committee members, which had caused a delay of over a month. The Sealdah City Civil Court ruled on September 3rd, with the Calcutta High Court endorsing the decision on September 15th, finally settling the dispute.
Construction work, including pandal, idol, and lighting, commenced on September 7th after a new committee was formed. To mitigate the time crunch, extra laborers have been engaged for pandal construction. This year's pandal will feature a theme inspired by the Swaminarayan Temple in New Jersey, and the idol is being crafted by Sadhan Pal of Jiten Pal & Sons. Preparations are on track for an October 14th opening on Chaturthi, promising a grand celebration.
Despite initial concerns, the puja, in its 108th year, is set to proceed as planned. A participant highlighted the puja's historical significance, noting its association with Subhas Chandra Bose and dismissing any notion that it might be canceled. The Calcutta High Court's validation of the committee formation process has put an end to any deadlock, ensuring the continuation of this historic tradition.
