A modern interpretation of Euripides' ancient Greek tragedy, "The Bacchae," has been brought to life by Katherine Soper. This production artfully blends classical myth with contemporary themes to delve into the fundamental causes of rebellion.
The narrative centers on a group of young women who become enchanted by a charismatic figure known as Bacchus, discovered online. This encounter ignites an unshakeable devotion among them, fostering a powerful bond and awakening something profound within each individual.
The play prompts audiences to question the nature of this intense connection. Is it a form of supportive sisterhood, or does it harbor a more perilous undertone? The production was commissioned and premiered as part of the Springboard Trainee Programme at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in July 2023.
