In November 2025, the hybrid surfing documentary "Point of Change" is poised to make its global sales debut after winning critical acclaim at film festivals. The documentary, directed by Rebecca Coley, tells the true story of the discovery of a perfect surfing point break in Lagundi Bay on Nias Island, Indonesia, and the dramatic events that unfolded for the local community.
The film has already garnered significant recognition, winning the Best Documentary Feature Film award at the Los Angeles Film Awards and the Committee Choice Award at the Bali International Film Festival. The Guardian has praised it as "a beautiful, gripping, thought-provoking film."
"Point of Change" chronicles the arrival of the first surfers to "discover" this idyllic surfing spot in the early 1970s on the then-remote Nias Island. However, the film explores the unintended and devastating social and ecological consequences that followed for the island's residents. Through a blend of first-person testimony, previously unseen Super 8 archive, contemporary interviews, and animation, the documentary offers a nuanced and impactful exploration of what happens when paradise is uncovered.
The film features an original score composed by Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Warbeck, as well as exclusive new music tracks by renowned DJ Paul Oakenfold and local Indonesian musicians. It has already been sold to Madman Films/Garage in Australia, which will be releasing it theatrically early next year.
