Producer Reclaims Awarapan: A Sequel Decades in the Making

Producer Vishesh Bhatt is bringing back the character of Shivam Pandit with 'Awarapan 2,' nearly two decades after the original film's release. Bhatt felt the first installment left Shivam Pandit presumed dead, but believed there was a greater spiritual and emotional story to explore. He stated that the sequel allows for a deeper connection where God now talks back to a broken Shivam.

Emraan Hashmi reprises his role, with Bhatt noting that the character's strength lies in his silences. The team acknowledges that audience perception differs between television and cinema, aiming to balance nuanced performances with theatrical impact. The sequel's direction is helmed by Nitin Kakkar, with writing by Bilal Siddiqi.

Mohit Suri, director of the original 'Awarapan,' is not involved in the sequel due to scheduling conflicts and his commitment to other projects like 'Saiyaara.' Bhatt clarified that Suri never proposed a sequel, and his creative path had diverged. Fresh voices were brought in to evolve the franchise after its long hiatus.

Shabana Azmi makes a special appearance, with Bhatt ensuring her decision was based on the story's strength. He also maintains a strong relationship with his uncle and mentor, Mahesh Bhatt, who has offered his blessings. Bhatt encourages fans who loved the original to support 'Awarapan 2' in theaters, calling it a second chance to demonstrate their affection beyond nostalgia.
