- Kilcher alleges her biometric identity was exploited without credit or compensation.
- Cameron allegedly admitted inspiration from Kilcher's face in a signed sketch.
Director James Cameron and the Walt Disney Company are facing legal action over the Avatar franchise. Actor Q'orianka Kilcher initiated the lawsuit, contending that Cameron used her facial features to design the character Neytiri without her permission.
Kilcher alleges that Cameron "extracted her facial features" after seeing her in an advertisement for "The New World." Her representatives stated that Cameron "exploited a young Indigenous girl's biometric identity and cultural heritage" for the film series.
The lawsuit details an event in 2010 where Cameron gifted Kilcher a signed sketch of Neytiri. He reportedly wrote that her beauty was his "early inspiration" for the character, noting, "Next time."
Kilcher stated she learned of the alleged facial feature extraction after a video of Cameron circulated on social media. In the clip, Cameron identified Kilcher's face as the inspiration. Her legal counsel described the director's actions as "theft" rather than inspiration.
