"Avatar: Fire and Ash" has achieved a commanding debut at the China box office, securing the No. 1 position with RMB384.1 million ($54.1 million) from its opening weekend of December 19-21. The highly anticipated film's initial success also saw a substantial $13.5 million generated through the Imax format, representing 23% of its total weekend gross.
This latest installment from 20th Century Studios has injected considerable energy into the late-December market. It significantly outperformed holdover films, including Disney's "Zootopia 2," which has accumulated an impressive $536.8 million to date in China. "Gezhi Town" followed in third place, earning $3 million for a running total of $49.7 million.
The overall weekend box office reached $86.5 million, contributing to China's year-to-date total of $7.18 billion. This figure represents a notable 23.4% increase over the same period in 2024, indicating a robust performance for the Chinese film industry.
