Augie Meyers, the celebrated Texas musician whose distinctive organ playing shaped the sound of the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados, died peacefully on Saturday. He was 85 years old.
Born in San Antonio, Meyers formed a lifelong musical partnership with Doug Sahm in 1953. Together, they co-founded the Sir Douglas Quintet in the 1960s, blending various genres into a unique sound. Meyers' Vox Continental organ became a signature element of the band's hits, including "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino."
Following the Sir Douglas Quintet's dissolution, Meyers and Sahm reunited to form the Texas Tornados in the 1990s with Flaco Jiménez and Freddy Fender. This influential Tex-Mex group released popular songs like "(Hey Baby) Que Pasó," which became a San Antonio anthem.
Meyers also contributed his talents to albums by renowned artists such as Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, and Bob Dylan. He continued to perform and inspire musicians until his passing.
