Audible's recent full-cast audio production of Bram Stoker's Dracula has achieved unprecedented success, marking the biggest opening week for any Audible Original and ranking fourth across all titles. This ambitious project was conceived as a global endeavor from its inception, featuring adaptations in seven languages, including English, Italian, French, Spanish, German, and Brazilian Portuguese.
The adaptation reimagines the classic novel by focusing on Mina as a central detective figure, using its epistolary structure to create an intimate, terrifying audio experience. Featuring a prominent cast such as Jonathan Bailey as Dracula and Ella Purnell as Mina, the production utilizes spatial Dolby Atmos sound design and an original choral score.
Aurelie de Troyer, Audible's head of content for international markets, explained that the goal was to embrace the novel's terror through sound, making the 1897 classic accessible to modern audiences. She emphasized that audio can serve as a 'proof of concept,' demonstrating the potential for successful screen adaptations and attracting both new and existing listeners.
The production process involved a multi-language approach, with local creative teams adapting the English template to their cultural contexts. This strategy ensured authenticity and resonance for each territory, with directors like Mary Lambert guiding the English version and local directors helming others, all aiming to deliver a cinematic audio experience.
