Trash to Treasure: Atlanta Trashion Show Flaunts Eco-Fashion

This weekend, Atlanta becomes the stage for Scraplanta's inaugural Trashion Show, an innovative event merging fashion with a strong environmental message. The show features unique wearable art meticulously crafted from reclaimed materials such as cardboard and fabric scraps, challenging conventional notions of waste.

Organizers emphasize the event's dual purpose: to raise awareness about the significant environmental footprint of fast fashion and to demonstrate that eco-friendly practices can align with high style. This initiative is the result of Scraplanta's Green Creatives Academy, a summer workshop series that equipped participants with skills to design and construct garments using secondhand fabrics and recycled materials.

"It's a huge problem," Symone Gaskin, Scraplanta's director of programming, stated regarding textile waste. "Landfills are piled with goods that are no longer used. We don't need to cycle through new fabric every time we need to make a piece. You can upcycle."

Featured designers like Wesley Hall of Quilts by Big Wes and StarFlower, founder of Starrland, are presenting their upcycled creations. Hall's work transforms quilting leftovers into a caftan, while StarFlower utilizes secondhand materials for her whimsical, flowy designs.

The Trashion Show takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday at the Lifecycle Building Center, located at 1116 Murphy Ave. SW, Atlanta. Tickets are available through Scraplanta's Ticket Tailor event page.
