Acclaimed director Asif Kapadia recently spoke about the profound experience of completing the landmark "Up" documentary series. Known for his intimate portrayals of larger-than-life figures like Ayrton Senna and Amy Winehouse, Kapadia found his "dream job" in documenting the lives of "ordinary people."
The "Up" series, which began in 1964 with "7 Up," has meticulously followed 14 individuals from childhood into their seventies, capturing pivotal life moments every seven years. This extensive project is the longest-running documentary series ever created and has been broadcast globally.
Kapadia was entrusted with directing the final installment, viewing it as a privilege to close the circle on the series originally conceived by Michael Apted, who passed away in 2021. He described growing up watching the series and feeling compelled to accept the offer despite a busy schedule.
Adapting to television production with its budget and time constraints, Kapadia revisited archival footage, discovering unseen material spanning 63 years of filming. He integrated this into the final film, even including Michael Apted as a character to reflect on the documentary's filmmaking nature.
Kapadia expressed immense pride in the completed work, a tapestry of 15 characters across 60 years. He highlighted the series' profound ability to capture the essence of human life, stating that "it's all there somewhere."
