A new community art exhibition is currently on display at St Albans Museum + Gallery throughout July, coinciding with South Asian Heritage Month. This showcase is the first to be held in a newly established community space designed to offer local groups a platform for their work and experiences. The featured artwork is by women from the Saheli Women's Day Centre, part of the Hertfordshire Asian Women's Association.
Under the guidance of local artist Suman Gujral, participants explored how craft can reflect personal histories and preserve culture. The resulting pieces delve into family narratives and shared experiences. Gujral's own work, inspired by her British-Indian-Sikh heritage and her parents' displacement during the 1947 Partition of India, is also on display.
Another contributor, Dina Mandalia, shared emotional pieces inspired by a photograph of her late sister, finding connection and meeting new people through the workshop. The exhibition embodies this year's South Asian Heritage Month theme, 'Unity in Diversity,' aiming to foster a sense of belonging by representing diverse community stories.
