Art Basel Hong Kong has commenced, running from Friday to Sunday, infusing the city with a vibrant cultural energy. As art world professionals gather, numerous institutions, museums, and galleries across Hong Kong are launching new exhibitions, offering a diverse array of artistic experiences.
Central to the exhibition landscape is a comprehensive survey of Lee Bul's work at M+, a museum of visual culture. This extensive exhibition, running through August 9, features over 200 pieces, including architectural installations and artworks that delve into utopian aspirations. It also highlights her renowned "Cyborg" series.
These "Cyborg" sculptures, which gained international acclaim in the late 1990s, are noted for their fusion of classical form with sci-fi elements, prompting contemporary reflections on gender, beauty, and technology. Meanwhile, the Gagosian gallery presents "Persephone," the first solo exhibition in Asia for American artist Mary Weatherford. This show, running through May 2, features her expansive neon-infused abstract paintings.
