Summary
- The Archers' new studio plans in Birmingham have been cancelled.
- The BBC is exploring recording the soap outside of Birmingham.
- Mayor vows to discuss options to keep the production in the city.
The BBC has decided against building a new dedicated studio for The Archers in Birmingham, a move aimed at significant cost savings. The corporation is now evaluating its existing studio infrastructure nationwide and considering external facilities in the West Midlands. This decision could lead to the iconic radio drama, set in the fictional West Midlands village of Ambridge, being recorded outside of Birmingham for the first time in its 75-year history.
The BBC confirmed that while the production team is still scheduled to move to Digbeth, Birmingham, in early 2028 as planned, the construction of a new studio within the Tea Factory hub will not proceed. The broadcaster stated that the impact on cast members, who record approximately eight days a month and often travel from various locations across the UK, will be thoroughly considered as part of the ongoing assessment process. No final decision has yet been made regarding the show's recording location.
Mayor of the West Midlands, Richard Parker, voiced his disappointment, emphasizing The Archers' deep roots in Birmingham's broadcasting heritage. He plans to meet with the Director General of the BBC to explore all available avenues to ensure the show continues to be produced in the city. Parker criticized the decision, stating it contradicts promises of regional investment and support.
