The film's narrative is set in the time between "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." Serkis described the story as both a physical and psychological hunt for Gollum. Warner Bros. is also developing another "Lord of the Rings" movie, co-written by Stephen Colbert and his son. "The Hunt for Gollum" is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
