Apple TV+ Cancels Beloved Mystery-Comedy

Apple TV+ has quietly discontinued its unique mystery-comedy series, The Afterparty, after two seasons. The show, which ran from 2022 to 2023, masterfully combined whodunit plots with absurdist comedy, a rare fusion for the streamer. Each episode offered a fresh perspective on the same crime, changing tone and genre with each character's retelling.

Critics and audiences lauded The Afterparty for its inventive storytelling and increased reward upon repeat viewings. The series transformed from a gripping mystery into an anthology masterpiece, with jokes and clues becoming clearer on subsequent watches. This made its cancellation in October 2023 particularly surprising.

Despite its critical acclaim and dedicated following, Apple TV+ opted not to renew the series. The decision baffled many, as the show's anthology format with mostly new casts each season suggested significant longevity. Fans expressed dismay online, hoping another platform might rescue the original show.

This cancellation is notable given Apple TV+'s general tendency to avoid prematurely ending its shows. While The Afterparty concluded its seasons with satisfying resolutions, the loss of such an original and acclaimed series leaves a void. Many fans wonder what further genre parodies and mysteries could have been explored with additional seasons.
