In a major move, Apple Original Films has acquired the global rights to the psychological thriller 'Sponsor', set to star Jason Segel and be directed by James Ponsoldt. The film, which will be produced by Platinum Dunes, is based on an original idea co-written by Segel and Ponsoldt.
The story follows Peter, played by Segel, who finds himself in a difficult situation after a terrible accident caused by driving under the influence. Faced with the choice of going to prison or entering a recovery program, Peter reluctantly agrees to the latter. There, he meets the charismatic yet enigmatic Jerry, who he believes could be the answer to his prayers.
This latest collaboration between Apple, Segel, and Ponsoldt comes on the heels of their Emmy Award-nominated comedy series 'Shrinking', which is set to return for its third season in January 2026. The trio had previously worked together on the 2015 feature 'The End of the Tour'.
Segel is currently in production on Marc Forster's 'Anxious People' opposite Angelina Jolie and will next star in Jorma Taccone's 'Over Your Dead Body', set for release in 2026.
