Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap Shifts Stance on Censorship in India

In a recent interview, acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap revealed that his long-held views on censorship in India have undergone a significant shift. Kashyap, known for his outspoken stance on creative freedom, shared that a personal encounter with the censor board made him see things differently.

Explaining his change in perspective, Kashyap said that when he took one of his films to the censor board, he was surprised to find the officials there to be polite and respectful. They were even surprised that his film did not contain violence or abusive language. The officials openly acknowledged that they were simply following the rules and guidelines set for them, and encouraged Kashyap to work with other filmmakers to push for change.

This conversation, Kashyap said, made him realize that the problem lies not with the individuals on the censor board, but with the larger system that needs reform. He now believes that lasting change can only come when filmmakers unite to collectively demand better creative freedom.

While Kashyap did not disclose the specific film he was referring to, his latest directorial, 'Nishaanchi', a crime drama, was released on September 19.
