Serkis Won't Helm Colbert's LOTR Flick

Andy Serkis has officially stated he will not be directing Stephen Colbert's forthcoming movie, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. Serkis is presently engaged in New Zealand, directing and starring in his own adaptation, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This new project is slated for release on December 17, 2027. Colbert's film, co-written with his son Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens, will explore narrative elements from six early chapters of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, which were not featured in Peter Jackson's original film adaptation.

Serkis's directorial effort, The Hunt for Gollum, is positioned chronologically between The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. It features a cast including Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace, alongside new additions like Kate Winslet and Anya Taylor-Joy. Serkis addressed the lack of diversity in his film's cast, relating it to Tolkien's influences from Norse mythology and the insular nature of The Shire. He emphasized a commitment to authenticity over 'politically correct' casting, suggesting diversity would only be included where narratively relevant.
