Andrea McLean, a former Loose Women presenter, experienced a devastating financial collapse after her business venture with husband Nick Freeney failed, leaving them with hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt. The 56-year-old revealed that they were compelled to sell their house, deplete her entire pension fund, and even sell two engagement rings to clear their liabilities.
Their business, This Girl Is On Fire, which began as a blog and e-commerce platform, faced insurmountable challenges, including the closure of a physical shop during the Covid pandemic and subsequent rejection of their app by Apple's App Store. Declining external investment, they remortgaged their property and took out bank loans, injecting significant personal funds monthly.
Following these setbacks and a period of long-Covid, the enterprise ultimately collapsed in 2022. McLean recounted a close friend's comment that her "star had faded," leading her to apply for a job at Starbucks, which went unacknowledged. By 2025, after withdrawing her pension and downsizing their lifestyle, the couple managed to clear their debts, though they are still some way from booking a holiday.
Denise Welch, a close friend and former co-star, was reportedly devastated upon learning the full extent of McLean's financial difficulties, particularly as she had been kept in the dark. McLean admitted she felt bad for not reaching out sooner, but was focused on fixing the problem. She has now penned a memoir, "Shameless," detailing her experiences with financial hardship.
