A significant historical artifact has been unearthed in the Bhupalpally district of Telangana. An ancient stone idol of Lord Vishnu, estimated to be from the 12th century, was found in a stream near Chinthakani village. The sculpture is believed to be a product of the Kakatiya period, showcasing the era's high level of artistic skill.
The discovery occurred during a minor excavation in a forest area. This idol can be stylistically and iconographically linked to the Kakatiya period. It is noted that the sculpture has sustained some damage in several parts, highlighting the need for its documentation and safeguarding by the Telangana Heritage department.
Interestingly, locals had previously observed the idol's head in the stream's sand about three years ago. It remained partially buried until recent water recession revealed the complete statue. The idol, carved from black granite, stands nearly five feet tall, with its nose and fingers showing minor damage.
Archaeologists from the Telangana State Archaeology department have been informed and will conduct an on-site examination to determine the next steps, including its potential relocation. This finding underscores Telangana's rich cultural heritage and the importance of preserving ancient artifacts.
