As the world stepped into the new millennium in 2000, the Hindi film industry played its biggest trump card by pitching two superstars representing two generations, legacy, and stardom in the romantic film Mohabbatein. The film, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, saw the legendary Amitabh Bachchan and the rising star Shah Rukh Khan face off in a tale of love and discipline.
Amitabh Bachchan, known as the Angry Young Man of the '70s and '80s, portrayed the stern principal Narayan Shankar, who ran his elite boarding school, the Gurukul, by the principles of "Parampara, Pratishtha, Anushasan" (Tradition, Prestige, Discipline). In contrast, Shah Rukh Khan's character, the free-spirited music teacher Raj Aryan, challenged these norms and acted as a mentor to the young couples struggling to navigate the strict rules of the Gurukul.
