The American Adventure theme park, a popular attraction in Derbyshire, closed permanently at the end of its 2006 season. The final day of operation was October 29, 2006, though many visitors were unaware it would be the attraction's last. Officially confirmed in January 2007, the closure marked the end of an era for the US-themed park that first opened in 1987.
The site, which has a history stretching back to medieval times and included Shipley Hall, was transformed into a country park in the 1960s and 70s. Britannia Park opened in 1985 but was later rebranded as the American Adventure, achieving considerable success.
Former visitors and employees recall the park's vibrant atmosphere, with live shows, themed areas like a Wild West town, and attractions like the Grand Niagara Falls log flume. Despite its popularity, changing ownership and dwindling visitor numbers led to its eventual closure.
Today, the former theme park site in the East Midlands has been redeveloped for housing and a care home. Residents living on the former grounds can still recall the layout of the rides, with some even choosing to live there due to its history.
