12 Oct
Summary
- Alka Yagnik became the most sought-after female singer in the 90s.
- She received more songs than leading male singers of the era.
- Anuradha Paudwal's shift created more opportunities for Alka.

Producer Ramesh Taurani recently discussed the evolving landscape of Hindi film music in the 1990s, particularly the ascent of Alka Yagnik. He recalled that established singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle remained popular, but a new generation, including Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, and Anuradha Paudwal, gained significant traction. Taurani highlighted that films like 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' and 'Aashiqui' were instrumental in popularizing these new voices.
He further explained that initially, Anuradha Paudwal was seen as the successor to Lata Mangeshkar, while Alka Yagnik was positioned as the new Asha Bhosle. However, Paudwal's decision to exclusively associate with T-Series for devotional music created a vacuum, allowing Yagnik to broaden her repertoire. Consequently, Alka Yagnik began receiving a diverse range of playback opportunities, including solos and duets, and ultimately sang more songs than leading male singers of the time.
