Albert Serra's latest cinematic endeavor, "Sixteen Moments of My Life," premiered out of competition at the Locarno Film Festival. The film meticulously documents a singular performance by the acclaimed screen legend Ingrid Caven at Paris's Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord. Director Serra clarified that the film is not a concert movie, stating his preference for projects where he is involved in the music.
The creation involved a unique collaboration between Caven and Catalan musicians Molforts, who regularly contribute to Serra's soundtracks. Over time, 16 songs were developed through an indirect process, with musicians composing and Caven improvising melodies without direct communication, fostering a subconscious creative environment.
Serra drew parallels between this process and his directing style in films like "Liberté" and "Pacifiction," where he intentionally minimizes direct communication with actors to encourage spontaneous occurrences. The film deliberately omits audience cut-aways, focusing solely on the genius musicians on stage, reflecting Serra's interest in performance as seen in his previous documentary.
The music itself blends autobiographical elements with styles ranging from opera and cabaret to Edith Piaf. Serra described each performance as a life-or-death, unique event, likening cinema's captured moments to the ephemeral nature of live music. He expressed future ambitions to direct a positive, lighthearted musical comedy, a stark contrast to his previous work.
Serra also reflected on past aspirations, regretting not directing screen icons Maria Callas and Elvis Presley in dramatic or comedic roles. He is currently working on another film, "Out of This World," set to be completed by the end of the year, which reportedly features an American delegation in Russia during the Ukraine war.
